6 Organization Rules You Must Follow For A Tidy Home

If you’ve lived in a disorganized lifestyle for long enough, you may just think that this is the way it is. But the root of organization is a habit. That means in order to get your home organized, you must break the messy habits you’ve grown used to over time. Often people say that they don’t have time or they have too many things. I’m here to tell you that there are solutions for everything that can help make your life cleaner and easier.

Home organization has positive benefits for your mental health as well. People who describe their homes as cluttered were more likely than others to be depressed and fatigued, according to Psychology Today. The ability to relax in your own home is important for your health. If you’re not feeling that way, it could be time to get organized.

1. Create Daily Habits

The first step to creating a perfectly organized home is creating habits. Most disorganization happens when we procrastinate. It could be the pile of laundry piling up or the cluttered table that seems to just be gathering more. Start by writing down a schedule of the tasks that need to get done. Start with one per day and gradually add more. This can be as simple as making sure the laundry is put away to major habits like organizing paperwork.

2. Declutter Your Home

Much of the disorganization in the home is caused by items we no longer use or need. You simply keep moving these things around until they start to build up. Depending on how much clutter you have in your home, this could be a weekend project or simply an afternoon. I prefer to go room by room when I’m decluttering and organizing. I start with older boxes and drawers, separating items I want to donate and items I want to toss. A good rule here is if you have not used the item in a year, you should consider getting rid of it.

3. Embrace The “One Touch” Rule

If you haven’t heard of the “one touch” rule, it’s about to transform and tidy your home. The rule means that you get one touch to move the item to where it needs to be, avoiding the temptation to put the object halfway to where it belongs. This means everything will go directly to its place and not left in between. This happens so often with coats, purses, books and more. This ensures that everything is where it needs to be at all times!

4. Combat Your Problem Areas

For any homeowner, there’s likely an area that you have trouble keeping organized more than the rest. For me, it’s laundry. While I’m great at doing laundry, I always seem to have trouble getting it folded and where it needs to be. For others, it’s mail and papers that seem to always pile up on the kitchen counter or table. Recognize the area where you tend to be the most disorganized and spend much of your tidying up there. Create systems that work for you. For example, before I go to bed at night, I double check to make sure all my clothes are in their place. A small new habit can go a long way!

5. Make A Family Plan

When you’re getting your home organized, it’s important to get the entire family involved. After all, everyone in the home can contribute to both the mess and cleanliness. Creating systems and making sure everyone understands is important. Have a specific place for backpacks, lunchboxes andtoys. You may even want to create a chore chart to ensure everyone is pitching in for where things need to be.

6. Have A Place For Everything

Sometimes, clutter happens because there’s a lack of storage. Even in the smallest spaces, containers and bins can really help to keep the room organized. Use a label maker to indicate what goes into each container if possible. This is especially helpful in a closet.

For photos, awards and other keepsakes, make sure you store them properly and likely out of the sunlight, so they don’t discolor or age. Photo albums and scrapbooks are a great way to organize these keepsakes as well as access them when you want a trip down memory lane.
